Minimally invasive medical technologies are experiencing rapid adoption in the marketplace, particularly in the field of cardiology, where catheter based tools are improving intravenous diagnostic and treatment techniques. While ultrasound equipment has been used for IV imaging, its effectiveness is limited, as features smaller than about 0.1mm are difficult or impossible to resolve. Higher resolution imaging is theoretically possible using optics, but until recently, accurately acquiring the signals was not possible. A combination of interferometry, high-speed data acquisition equipment, and radar-like DSP techniques have created the new IV imaging modality now known as Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT).
